The Inn's History
Originally built in the 1930’s, the Sierra Mountain Inn was known then as the Sierra Motel.
It was located on Highway 20 at the gateway to Grass Valley. At the time, Grass Valley was the richest gold town in California. At its prominent location, the motel prospered and thrived for decades.
Travelers, who could afford an automobile, enjoyed parking right in front of their room, and the convenience of not having to drag their luggage upstairs – a feature that old hotels couldn’t offer. Nestled under the trees, Sierra Motel offered comfort and amenities for the weary traveler.
Later, Highway 20 was relocated about a mile south where it joined with Highway 49 and bypassed the Sierra Motel. Over time, the motel fell into disrepair due to the lack of traffic exposure and then ultimately the closing of the gold mine.
In 2003, the motel underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into comfortable suites with modern amenities. To reflect the upgrade, the name was changed to the Sierra Mountain Inn to better showcase the cozy Inns’ new image and warm hospitality.
Even now, the Inn is still upgrading and creating a time honored tradition…to provide guests the most comfortable experience for their stay in the beautiful town of Grass Valley.
History rests here … Established in 1930.
